Hi James, I have a few questions about the shipments of steel plate -- related to setting up a sampling plan.

(1) Please describe a shipment? Is it a truckload, a railroad car, etc.

(2) Does the shipment contain only one nominal thickness of steel plate?

(3) Are there other quality characteristics that a sampling plan would be applied to? If so, how many?

(4) What do you consider to be a lot for the purposes of sampling - a shipment, or are there subgroup within the shipment. In other words, if the sampling plan were to reject, is the whole shipment rejected or just part of it?

(5) What will happen to a lot of steel plate if rejected? Will it be sorted, returned to the supplier, etc.?

(6) How will thickness be measured, and how precise is the instrument?

(7) How is the thickness requirement specified? As a percentage, as a range, etc.?

(8) Do you have a situation where, for a given sampling lot, some steel plates will meet the thickness requirement and some may not? In other words, there can be a percent defective within the lot?

I couldn't help thinking of many questions. I think that this preliminary set is a good starting point to see which type of sampling plan will work well for your application.

Sincerely, Stan Hilliard
