Bill, Here is a success story: In 1974, I had to testify in federal district court in Minneapolis in support of a sampling plan that I had designed. Its purpose was to estimate the dollar amount that my employer was overcharged in freight bills.

The lawer for the opposition argued some uninformed ideas about sampling. He bought in a paid expert witness to support him -- late renowned W. Edwards Deming. I had a well documented argument that traced each of my steps in developing the sampling plan to an authorative source - a book written by Deming himself many years before. My side received the $100,000.00 sampling plan estimate!

Lesson #1: Understand well the body of knowledge of your profession -- most don't. Lesson #2: Appeal to an authority that your opponent cannot deny.
