This sounds to me like a good application for sequential sampling. One issue is whether to use an attribute sequential, variables sequential, or a poisson count sequential. It is possible to assign demerits to defects so that some types count more than others.
Please give more details. For example with drawings, how many characteristics? What are the natural groupings: one drawing, a group of related drawings, etc.
