The presence of any pathogens indicates that the lot should be rejected. Therefore no number other than zero is meaningful. However, the presence of pathogens may be infered by a large population of non-pathogenic bacteria. Therefore the colony count of non-pathogens is meaningful. My understanding is that sampling can be minimized if a corrolation between the two can be established and one defines the limit for non-pathogenic colonies and holds a zero tolerance limit for pathogens. For this case how would you size up the sampling plan?
