Selecting a sample from a lot consisting in multiple boxes

Hi. I have seen in different companies the practice of, once the sample size has being determined, use the formula sqrt(n)+1 for determining how many boxes of a lot to open. That way the sample is distributed among the resultant quantity of boxes. Where I can find if that is a standard, accepted and documented practice? Is it part of any acceptance sampling standard?

Thanks for your help, Rosie
