Hi Brian,

QUESTION: “Does the 4.0 mean that we have a 96% confidence level by using this method?”

ANSWER: No, the term “confidence level” adds confusion in the field of acceptance sampling. It raises the questions: Confidence that what: Confidence that it is a good plan? Confidence that the plan meets a standard? Confidence that accepted lots will contain AQL percent defective? Confidence that percent defective lots greater than AQL=4.0% will not be accepted?

All of the above interpretations are wrong. See:

QUESTION: “What does the Inspection level of S1 mean?”

ANSWER: S1 does not have an intrinsic meaning. Inspection levels hide the need for you to consider the quality of lot that you consider to be off-grade and want to prevent from passing on to the consumer.
